What Are
Lab-Grown Diamonds?
A modern guide to the most significant innovation in fine jewellery in a century — and why the house of Senco est 1938 believes cultivated diamonds are the new standard of luxury.

If you have ever wondered, what is a lab grown diamond, the answer is elegantly simple: it is a real diamond. Not a simulant. Not a substitute. A diamond created in a controlled environment rather than pulled from the earth, yet identical in every optical, chemical, and physical property to its mined counterpart.
At Sennes, we do not view lab-grown diamonds as a compromise. We view them as a refinement — the same fire and brilliance, freed from the ecological and ethical weight of extraction. This is the stone of a more conscious, more beautiful future.
What is a lab-grown diamond, exactly?
A lab-grown diamond is created by replicating the natural conditions under which diamonds form deep within the earth. Two advanced methods are used today:
HPHT
High Pressure, High Temperature mimics the volcanic forces of the earth by applying extreme heat and pressure to a carbon seed.
CVD
Chemical Vapour Deposition grows a diamond layer by layer from a carbon-rich gas, achieving exceptional clarity and precision.
The result is a crystal of pure carbon arranged in the characteristic diamond lattice — indistinguishable from mined diamonds to the naked eye and even under most gemological instruments. Every Sennes stone is certified by the International Gemological Institute (IGI) according to the same rigorous standards used for mined diamonds.
The 4 Cs of Lab-Grown Diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds are graded on the same four attributes as mined diamonds: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat. At Sennes, we accept only the exceptional.
The cut determines how light dances within the stone. We favour excellent and ideal cuts that maximise brilliance and fire.
Near-colourless grades (D–G) are selected for their icy, pure presence. Sennes diamonds are chosen for their absence of warmth.
Inclusions are natural to all diamonds. We choose stones where inclusions are invisible to the unaided eye, ensuring clarity without compromise.
Because lab-grown diamonds are free from the scarcity premiums of mining, larger carat weights become attainable expressions of taste rather than status alone.
Lab-grown vs. mined diamonds
The difference is not in the diamond. It is in the origin. Below is how the two compare across the qualities that matter most to a modern luxury buyer.

The environmental promise
No open-pit mining
Lab-grown diamonds require no displacement of earth, no deforestation, and no disruption of ecosystems.
Transparent provenance
Each stone can be traced from laboratory to setting, removing the ambiguity that can shadow mined supply chains.
Lower carbon footprint
When grown with renewable energy, the carbon footprint of a lab-grown diamond is a fraction of that of an extracted stone.
Conflict-free by design
Because they are created above ground, lab-grown diamonds carry no risk of funding conflict or exploitative labour practices.
Why lab-grown diamond jewellery is the future of luxury
Luxury is no longer defined only by rarity. It is defined by intention. The modern collector asks: Where did this come from? Who made it? What did it cost the earth?
Lab grown diamond jewelry answers those questions with clarity. It offers the same extraordinary beauty as mined diamonds, but with a provenance that aligns with the values of a new generation: sustainability, transparency, and uncompromising design.
At Sennes, we pair these stones with Italian design sensibility and Indian craftsmanship. Every piece is set in our Mumbai atelier by artisans who understand that true luxury is not about what is taken from the earth, but what is given back to it.
"A diamond is timeless. The way we create it can be, too."
